Tech admissions officers want to see that you took a challenging high school course load and fared at the top of your class. While GPAs and SAT scores are important, an interesting extracurricular or job experience can make your application even more competitive. Being VERY involved in just one activity seems to look better than being marginally involved in many activities. Having an unusual work experience or internship will distinguish you from other applicants. Tech wants to admit students who are involved, not just smart. Apply to Tech by October 31st to participate in the President Scholars program and to improve your chance of acceptance.

Having spoken with the directors of admissions several times, there are a few things you should know about their process. First, they don't take your senior year into account. If I remember correctly, they ask for your classes, but they don't look for grades or any of that. Secondly, they are a pretty nice group of people. They only have so many spots to offer, and consequently they have to turn people down, but as a general rule, if they are unsure whether or not to admit a person, they typically will admit them. If the person isn't a good match with the university, they typically transfer after a year and no one ends up the worse. If they were a good match, someone that otherwise wouldn't have had the opportunity to go Tech is able to. It's a win-win situation. Best of luck!
